Contino upgrades its winery with support from the European FEAGA programme

04 Jul 2025

In 2024, Viñedos del Contino launched an ambitious investment project aimed at improving its winery facilities, boosting operational efficiency, and enhancing wine care throughout the production process. This initiative was funded by the European Union’s FEAGA programme (Project No. 38-INV2024-56), supporting the modernisation of the wine sector.

Among the actions carried out, a new automated temperature and humidity control system was installed in the barrel ageing rooms. This ensures optimal ageing conditions by preventing wine losses through evapotranspiration and helping maintain consistent environmental parameters.

A 50-hectolitre pneumatic press was also acquired, significantly improving the extraction process for white wines and increasing efficiency in red wine pressing.

In terms of logistics, custom-made cradles were added to facilitate the handling of 500-litre barrels, improving ergonomics and workflow in the winery. In addition, 176 new French oak barrels were introduced, sourced from different cooperages and with varied toasting levels, to enhance the complexity and character of each vintage.

A key element of the project was the installation of a perimeter security system. Viñedos del Contino is located in a truly privileged setting: surrounded by vineyards and nestled along the Ebro River, in a natural landscape of great beauty and tranquillity. While this location—far from urban centres—is one of its defining charms, it also calls for specific security measures to ensure the protection of the winery and its wines at all times.

Finally, a 40-hl foudre was added for the ageing of San Rafael, Contino’s garnacha-based wine. This large-format oak vessel helps preserve the wine’s varietal freshness and contributes greater complexity to its final expression.

Through this investment, Contino reinforces its commitment to excellence, innovation, and respect for its identity and natural surroundings.
