The new Contino Rioja Alavesa wine bar: architecture and wine in a unique setting
A 16th-century barn transformed into a design wine bar. In the hamlet of Laserna (Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa), Viñedos del Contino has opened a new wine bar born from the rehabilitation of a 16th-century barn. The project, designed by Febrero Studio, turns a historic space into a contemporary visitors’ centre that blends respect for tradition, contemporary design and the welcoming spirit that defines Contino.
Febrero Studio: architecture and hospitality among the vines
The Madrid-based studio has created an intervention that preserves the building’s original rustic structure —brick pillars, stone walls— while enriching it with noble materials such as stained oak wood, travertine marble and natural linen. The black-painted ceiling enhances the sense of space, while the new openings frame privileged views of the vineyard and the River Ebro.
The result is a warm and inviting space reminiscent of a private club, featuring bespoke furniture designed for tastings, gatherings and moments of relaxation.
A reimagined route for visitors
In addition to renovating the barn, Febrero Studio has redesigned the estate’s gardens and outdoor pathways. Today, the visit to Contino follows a fluid itinerary that links the bottling area, winery and wine cellar, culminating in a terrace with a pergola and a forged platform overlooking the landscape.
In this way, the Contino wine bar becomes both the starting point and the finale of the wine tourism experience, offering the perfect place to savour wines, join guided tastings or enjoy a light bite in a unique environment.

Founded in 1973, Viñedos del Contino was the first winery in Rioja to adopt the château model, making wines exclusively from its estate-grown grapes.
